“Who exactly will photograph my wedding, and can I see their individual work?” This is the single most important question. Many studios run several teams on the same date, so the portfolio you fell for may not be the person who turns up. Good answer: a named lead and their own portfolio. Worry: “one of our team, they’re all great.”
“How many photographers and cinematographers will be present?” Coverage depth depends on crew. Candid coverage usually needs a second shooter so moments aren’t missed while portraits happen. Good answer: a clear number matched to your events.
“What’s your backup plan if the photographer falls ill or equipment fails?” Weddings can’t be reshot. Good answer: backup gear, dual memory cards, and a network of trusted photographers. Worry: no real plan.
About coverage
“Have you shot my kind of wedding and venue before?” Community rituals and venue light both matter. A team used to bright outdoor weddings may struggle in a dim mantapa, and vice versa. Good answer: relevant full galleries.
“How do you handle our specific rituals?” Knowing the sequence means being in position for fleeting moments. Good answer: they ask about your traditions and reference our kind of shot list.
“How many hours/days of coverage does this include, and what if events run late?” Indian weddings overrun. Good answer: clear hours and a fair overtime policy in writing.
About deliverables
“How many edited images will we receive, and in what form?” “Photos and video” isn’t a deliverable. Good answer: a specific edited count and format — see realistic numbers in how many photos to expect.
“What exactly is included — albums, films, teasers?” Get album sizes/spreads and film lengths/types (highlight, full, same-day edit) specified. Good answer: an itemised list.
“When will we receive everything?” Set expectations for previews, full gallery and films. Good answer: clear timelines in writing — see delivery timelines.
“How long do you keep our files backed up?” Files can be lost. Good answer: a defined archival period.
About the contract and money
“Is everything in a written contract?” Coverage, team, deliverables, timelines, payment schedule, travel, rescheduling, cancellation and image usage rights should all be documented. Worry: “we don’t really do contracts.”
“What’s the payment schedule, and what covers travel/stay for outstation weddings?” Good answer: a transparent schedule with travel planned in, no vague extras.
“What are your rescheduling and cancellation terms?” Weddings move. Good answer: a fair, written policy.
About working together
“How involved will you be on the day, and how do you keep things calm?” You want a team that leads gently, not one that stages your wedding. Good answer: they describe a considered, unobtrusive approach.
“Can we do an engagement or pre-wedding shoot first?” Working together beforehand builds comfort. Good answer: yes, and they see the value in it.
Red flags to watch for
